VisionEthics Governance Specialist moderated ‘Money Politics: Financing Free and Fair Elections’ organised by Transparency International Malaysia
Alan Kirupakaran, our Governance Specialist, recently moderated a panel session entitled ‘Money Politics: Financing Free and Fair Elections’ organised by Transparency International Malaysia, that discussed legislative reforms for electoral campaign financing.
“Reforming political financing in Malaysia is long overdue. Over the years, active discussions have been held involving political parties, civil society and the various governments of the day on this issue. What are the obstacles holding back political parties from supporting legislation on reforming political financing and bringing it to Parliament?”
Alan added: “Such legislation will go a long way towards removing the element of corruption from the political process. Civil society will continue to push for this, and it is important that Members of Parliament and political parties realise the importance of reforming political financing in Malaysia.”
The panelists included Dr Terence Gomez, the former UM Professor of Political Economy; Thomas Fann, the Chairman of Bersih 2.0; YB Dr Ong Kian Ming, DAP Member of Parliament for Bangi; YB Dato’ Seri Utama Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, Pejuang Member of Parliament for Jerlun and YB Puan Isnaraissah Munirah Bt Majilis, Warisan Member of Parliament for Kota Belud.
